A standing dead tree is called a snag. Snags are valuable wildlife habitat resources and are important for the forest life cycle. Even after a tree has died, it supports life as a home to birds, insects, lichens and fungus. When it falls to the ground, it goes back to the earth and decomposes into nutrient rich soil creating new life.
